What a Birth Chart Is and What Data It Needs
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. The more precise the data, the more precise the chart - and birth time matters more than most people expect.
What a birth chart is
A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born: the position of the Sun, Moon and planets relative to Earth and to each other, tied to a specific date, time and place. Western astrology has worked with this kind of chart for over two thousand years - the method is old, but the calculation still needs precise inputs, or the result turns into a rough approximation.
A chart doesn't show fate or a schedule of events, more a stable structure underneath - core personality traits, what you tend to be sensitive to, where your strengths sit, and where more effort is usually needed. These are tendencies, not guarantees: a chart doesn't predict specific events and doesn't replace your own decisions.
What data a chart needs
A basic calculation of planets and signs only needs a date of birth. But a full birth chart, complete with houses, ascendant and precise angles, needs two more pieces of data: an exact birth time (ideally to the minute) and a birth place (city and, where possible, coordinates). Without time and place, part of the chart simply can't be calculated correctly - that's a feature of the method itself, not a matter of preference.
Why exact birth time matters so much
The ascendant, the point on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, shifts by roughly one degree every four minutes. An error of an hour can push the ascendant into a neighbouring zodiac sign, and with it, all twelve houses of the chart, which govern different areas of life: relationships, career, home, money. That's why "give or take an hour" isn't a small detail - it can produce an entirely different chart.
If you were born somewhere with a complicated timekeeping history, local time may not match today's time zone at all - some regions have shifted zones, added or dropped seasonal clock changes, or used non-standard local time decades ago. Getting this history right matters as much as getting the clock time right. Our city pages work through this kind of local time history in detail, place by place.
What to do if your birth time is unknown
This is common and completely normal - most people simply don't remember their exact birth time, and documents don't always survive. The solution is a sun chart, where the Sun is placed on the ascendant as a working substitute. In this kind of chart, everything that doesn't depend on the clock stays accurate: planetary positions by sign, personality, relationships, money, purpose. The houses and exact ascendant, though, become an approximation in a sun chart, and that's always stated plainly rather than presented as a precise calculation.
If your birth time survives on a birth certificate, or a relative remembers it, it's worth using that data even if it feels imprecise. A more exact time can always be refined later.
